Imagine bumping into someone at a conference and suffering a downpour of their political, religious or sexual views that you couldn’t care less about. Well, it won’t ever happen really (hopefully) as most of us are extremely professional at such social events. However, this line is easily diluted when it comes to social media. One often doesn’t think before posting an opinion online. While you may believe it is great to share your opinion, do stop and think whether you would be interested in following someone with similar social media activity.
Often, professionals stay away from social media due to fear of being misunderstood or not being sure of social media etiquette. While pouring your heart out online is not a good idea, being a social media miser will also not do any good to your personal brand.
In order to build a stellar personal brand, you need to consistently post across your social profiles in a planned fashion. Ask yourself the following questions:
What is your message?
What do you want to be perceived as?
What is your buzz?
Once you have zeroed in on the above, actively post without deviating from your USP as well as find relevant groups and communities on LinkedIn and Facebook, where you can participate in conversations around your areas of interest. Post helpful comments that are relevant to the group members and see your connections grow.
Remember, don’t be stingy with social media; just be stringent.
